The Hoover Dam is one of the greatest constructions the world has seen but left in its wake a number of logistical challenges, with the huge Colorado River span crossed by an multi-billion dollar construction effort which created the World’s largest concrete arched span of its type. The Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge is within the Lake Mead national Park, approximately 30 miles to the southeast of Las Vegas along Route 93. This immense structure is capable of carrying large vehicles along a straighter path through the area. The previous option was a treacherous route across the dam with winding inclines and a dangerous series of blind curves.

The new bridge was a boost for transport operations between Las Vegas and Phoenix and in terms of the CANAMEX Corridor/Trade Route, overcame what was seen as a huge barrier to the efficient movement of transport. The new brige heralded more than a simple resolution to a bottleneck – it also paved the way (literally) for the motion in government from both Arizona and Nevada to step up the implementation of the CANAMEX Trade Route.

This new motion meant the two States seeking Interstate designation for the CANAMEX Corridor. The US Senate’s Transportation Bill S1813, negotiated legislation which included the proposal to upgrade Route 93 to become Interstate I-11. This change allows the coalition to move forward with development along a key section in the southern endof the CANAMEX Corridor region. The bill was passed by the Senate by a large majority and began the implementation of $109 billion of spending in 2013.

Idaho has been the slowest State to implement or even fund future plans for the CANAMEX Corridor. In stark contrast to the fervent construction work in Arizona and Nevada, with the timely completion of the bridge over the Colorado to replace the existing dangerous Hoover Dam crossing, Idaho has yet to address the needs of the CANAMEX corridor project despite their interest in the plannign stages. It is possible that the economic impact of this trade route is not as signioficant in this State. Add to that the recent economic woes, confounded by Idaho’s relatively low average income and it is no surprise that investment is not as swiftly forthcoming as necessary for such a project. Idaho has the furthest inland port, service by waterays and locks and should be a prime prospect for the success of economic growth due to the increased trade of the CANAMEX route.

There is also the environmental impact of upgrading roads to increase to more lanes with heavier and larger vehicles in an area of the US which is particularly untouched by development. This fact alone could explain the lack of motivation in further spoiling this unbelievably beautiful landscape.

It has yet to be seen whether improvements in the world economy, or changes in the mood of those in government and legislature will redress the situation. It is more likely simply an issue of placing more emphasis on the benefits of helping to complete a vital section of this trade route as much as anything.
